I found so many things for grads on the blogosphere. All sorts of advice about career and life is popping up like crazy. I like this one about top 10 things for grads here. It is cheesy, yes it is! But it’s so so true. Anyone who blushes at hearing, “never stop dreaming” or “stay true to yourself” still hasn’t grown up because in the end that’s all there is.

Advice for Grads
Thursday, May 28th, 2009No more finals!
Sunday, May 24th, 2009Last Thursday marked the last day of finals on the UC Berkeley campus. It’s nice to have this sweet long weekend as a reward with friends and family. Too bad about the weather! It’s been ok but a bit foggy for my taste. You know what would have been a fantastic way to end the year? Tickets to Flight of the Conchords at the Berkeley Community Theatre. Unfortunately I only just discovered this while perusing the paper for things to do this coming week. If only I knew 2 months ago, probably as far back as one would have had to purchase tickets for them not to already be sold out. There are so many amazing things happening this weekend but missing this one takes the cake! It’s ok. Tomorrow will still be relaxing and fun without the FotC. Sigh.
Catch a baseball game to end the year
Monday, May 18th, 2009I was just thinking of what parents can do with their new graduates this weekend that would be a nice way to say good bye to the Berkeley campus. How about a Baseball game? If you’re more of a theater/arts family, Mark Morris is in town at the Zellerbach but I guarantee those tickets sold out weeks ago. It’s still worth checking into. Meanwhile, catching a baseball game on campus with your graduate would be a fun and mellow fair well.
Commencement Checklist
Thursday, May 14th, 2009There is little over a week to go until Commencement day at the Greek Theater. Just thinking about it makes me nervous and giddy. I wanted to do a last minute checklist to add to some of the things mentioned in the video:
• Dress for the weather. Sun protection and water is a must
• If you forget to bring water or need snacks, there are several stores on and off campus, the closest one is in Wurster Hall, on campus near College and Bancroft.
• Wear comfortable shoes. There is a lot of rough, uneven ground around the theater and on campus. My sister wore cute wooden shoes to my graduation and was hobbling around, not cute. If you must wear uncomfortable shoes, bring a pair of sneakers for later.
• Hurry up and make those reservations. My friend said his family went to a restaurant he normally went to while he was a student, nothing fancy and it was really sweet. But even if you are dining in San Francisco or another place in the bay area, make sure to get those plans in place now because Berkeley is not the only school that is having graduation ceremonies at this time of year. Here is a SF Chronicle article on the top 100 restaurants in the bay area.
• Plan your parking strategy. Aside from the Durant Garage, there are parking spots you can get on campus for premium prices. The frats up on Piedmont often sell their spots for big bucks too. But add at least 30 minutes to your travel plans for parking if you are bringing your car. If you take BART, there is a perimeter bus that goes around the campus you can catch every 15 minutes or so; the walk from BART station to the Greek Theatre is little over a mile uphill.
• Don’t forget the flower shop on the first floor of the Durant Parking Lot. Buy your bouquet at Moe’s and their validation gets you half off your parking fee upstairs.
If I think of anything else, I will be sure to post. Eight days and counting.
Watch and Learn
Tuesday, May 12th, 2009Graduation Jitters?
Wednesday, May 6th, 2009It’s less than three weeks to Commencement on the Berkeley campus. Because of the timing of this blog, I am going to start with Commencement but soon we will go over settling your new student into their housing of choice and what resources there are around town to help them through that.
Commencement means new beginnings for your Berkeley grad, and lots of endings. So your student is either saying “I have senioritis” or “I am stressed out trying to keep my grades up while dealing with commencement”. If your cal student has senioritis, there is nothing you can do about it. Consider this semester a wash but make sure that you don’t give them more reason to check out. They are pretty burned out from 4 years of studying and they will take any excuse to take leave of reality.
If your student is of the other variety and wants to get the most out of those last few classes to give their GPA another little boost, don’t get in their way. Help out with errands and preparing for commencement in general and just make yourself available. If you’re not too far away, some home cooked meals for the freezer could make a big difference right about now. That’s probably true for students in either camp because what they need through this difficult transition is some comfort (not to be confused with smothering or lecturing).
So You Married a Cal student…
Tuesday, May 5th, 2009or you’re just dating one, or you’re a parent to one, or worse, you are housing one. They are only going to seem psychotic some of the time, usually only during midterms and finals. The rest of the time you will probably be able to enjoy a semi-normal life. In between the 5 books they are assigned that week and the meetings they have on campus, the average Cal student is a lovely person. So if you are a loving mother, father, brother, sister, grandparent or best friend from high school I am writing this blog for you.
I am a Berkeley Grad and since I left, I have recovered very nicely. Sure I was a maniac when I was on campus, sometimes even having emotional breakdowns over 0.10 shift in my GPA, running around trying to do too much and sometimes giving up on life for a few days in between midterms and finals because I couldn’t believe the semester was still going long after my nerves were stretched thin by multiple all nighters just to keep up with my reading.
It’s hard trying to love a person who is doing this to themselves, even if it is for the sake of self improvement. At one point, I asked my mother not to visit me because she was a detriment to my grades. Can you believe that? So if you are the mother who has been asked not to visit, or the father who gets yelled at when offering guidance, or the boyfriend who apparently understands absolutely nothing and you still want to be a part of this person’s life, here is my very first piece of advice: lay low for now but stick around because when they are done with school, they are going to need you while they go through their much needed identity shift.
